I believe that we weren’t made to do life alone and we shouldn’t have to. God in His design, made us to be in relationships – ultimately with Him, but also with others.
God’s story has always not only been about Him connecting with individuals, but God connecting with His people, which is you and I. We, as God followers, are His people, God’s people, and He speaks to us and changes us not only as we connect with Him individually, but together with like-minded people.
That’s why I believe there is great power in investing your time and energy into a small group of people who you can do life with and where you can experience the kind of life change that only happens when you do life on a deeper level with each other. In the context of church life, I believe this happens best in a small group.
I personally have been a part of small groups for over 20 years, most of my adult life. There was a time when I wasn’t actively involved in a small group and I really noticed my growth in God slow during this season. That’s why I make time and space in my schedule, and our families schedule, to make connecting mid week in a small group a part of my life. I truly believe that I grow best and am inspired and encouraged to live for God by being a part of a small group where I can learn off others and iron can sharpen iron (and they can smooth out some of my prickly bits too!).
In the last couple of years I’ve been in a small group with an incredible group of women. We’ve laughed together, cried many times, celebrated each other’s mountain tops and victories, and shared the burden of life’s challenges and blows. It’s taken at times a bit of perseverance and discipline to stick to turning up on the night’s when I’ve left the house like a bomb’s hit it and rushed the kids to bed so I could make it out – but when I look back at the richness and fullness of what I gain from investing into this kind of community I know that I wouldn’t swap it for anything.
If you’ve never been a part of a small group or not sure about what they are really all about they are smaller groups of people that gather based around common interests or a desire to grow closer together and with God. At Tweed Coast Church our small groups in 2018 will meet weekly and each term there will be new groups beginning. Why don’t you check out our website tweedcoastchurch.com.au/small-groups/ to see what groups are running in Term 1 and sign up online or at the small group sign up tent on Sunday’s.
I believe your life will never be the same!
