Hypercolour Life

by Pastor Jono

I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! Ephesians 1:17-19

I remember clearly my nana telling me the story of when she first saw color television. As a young girl she recalled times of sitting with her family gathered around a “wireless radio, and later as a young lady watching with amazement their families black and white TV. But she recalled with delight when her father brought home their first colour tv. Seeing real people, in real life in real colour, as they sat in their lounge room, it was beyond what she could have ever imagined.

Sadly many people (even Christians) live a life in black and white. If you mix black and white together it makes grey. You weren’t created for grey. This devotional will stir, challenge, and encourage you to live the life you were created for, a life not only in full colour, but in hyper colour.

As we take the next days to step into this life, I pray the Holy Spirit will do a deep work in you. Allow him in, invite him to do in you, amazing fresh things and you watch how your life takes on the beautiful life giving colour of heaven.

A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. John 10:10

Rather than black and white, or even colour, Jesus offers you a hyper coloured high definition life. There are two Greek words for ‘life’. The word ‘bios’, from which we get the word ‘biological’ means the condition of being alive rather than dead – mere existence. The other word ‘zoe’ means the full, abundant, spacious, open-hearted, richness of life that Jesus speaks about – a life of fulfilment and purpose. This is life in hyper colour. You can live this hyper coloured life, by  living a life of knowing God , living a life of freedom, live a life of purpose, and a life making a difference.

Lord, I open my heart to receive your life, help me to live the full, abundant, spacious, open hearted life that you have for me.

DAY 2

I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally Ephesians 1:17-19

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. James 4:8

Kelly Slater is arguably the greatest surfer ever , winning 11 world titles, producing and starring in count-less surf films and documentaries, Kelly Slater is famous with surfers and non surfers alike. As a young man I watched some of his early videos (its a type of DVD) until the video broke. I knew so much about him, but I’ve never met him or gotten to know him.

The wonder of a hyper coloured life will always begin and be developed with you personally Knowing God for Yourself. The Hyper coloured life is one where you move from knowing about God to personally Knowing him. When we refuse to know God we soon forget how to be human. Because of Jesus our lives can move out of the grey and our lives can take on the colours of God.

Lord, I want to know you for myself. I desire to know you personally. I thank you for your promise that I can be close to you.

Intentionally and purposefully make actions towards getting to know Jesus better.

“You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you’ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren’t willing to receive from me the life you say you want. John 5:39-40

If we fail to see that reading the bible, prayer, and worship  is about Jesus and a relationship with him, things can easily become a dry, academic and arid activity. Once you understand that it is all about Jesus, you see these disciplines as a way to grow in your relationship with him, it becomes the source of life.

The way to find life is to come to Jesus. On numerous occasions, especially in John’s Gospel, Jesus refers to this life as ‘eternal life’ (for example, v.39). Eternal life comes from this relationship (v.40). It starts now and goes on forever. It is the hyper colour life.

Jesus is not a commodity. Every time you study the Bible, take time to pray or any time you worship–expect to encounter Jesus.

Lord, today I come to you – the source of life. As I study the Scriptures, may my heart burn within me as I encounter you.

Commit to a regular time and place to encounter Jesus.

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. Ephesians 1:18

Steve McQueen’s film Twelve Years a Slave is based on the story of Solomon Northup, born free in New York state but kidnapped in Washington DC in 1841, sold into slavery and kept in bondage for twelve years in Louisiana. He describes at length the horrors of slavery on the cotton and sugar plantations.

Eventually, in 1853, he was rescued from slavery and reunited with his family. In an emotional description of the reunion Solomon said “I have been restored to happiness and liberty.’ Slavery is horrific. Freedom is wonderful.

‘Freedom’ is probably the best contemporary word to define what the Bible means by ‘salvation’. The whole Bible could be summed up as the ‘history of salvation’. It is the story of God’s desire and purpose to free his people. You are set free. Living the Hyper coloured life involves living in freedom.

Lord, flood my whole heart with light so that I can fully understand the confident hope to which you have called me.

Join a small group where you can grow in freedom together.

I pray ….that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! Ephesians 1:17-19

Purpose in life is far more important than property or possessions. Having more to live with is no substitute for having more to live for. Nothing satisfies until we live for a purpose bigger than ourselves.

‘The two greatest days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why’.

God has a specific purpose for you. In addition, God’s general will for all of us is revealed in the Bible. The God of all the universe has created you with an intelligent design, you are not a mistake, you’re not a number, your life is about more than a pay check. Your life is designed with purpose and meaning.

Sadly many people do not discover or follow this purpose. He has designed you and aligned an opportunity for you to step into a God given purpose that will be so fulfilling to you as you use all the special gifts, passions, and life experiences that he has given to.

Lord, thank you for designing me with special gifts and talents to be used for an amazing God purpose. Help me to discover my design and fulfill the destiny that you have for my life.

Discover your God-design through the “Pathways” process at Church.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. Matthew 5:14-16

Having four kids I’ve done my fair share of colouring in with them, particularly when they were young. All four kids never contained their colouring to the book or the page.I discovered that if my wife or I didn’t pack the pens or pencils away immediately the walls, floors kitchen benches would also become a place for my kids to express their artistic talent.

As followers of Jesus he colours our life, and our calling is to take that colour into the world. When you take the God colours into the world you will see God use you to make a difference in peoples lives. You can make a difference, in fact I believe -you want to make a difference. You are hard wired that way. It’s in you! You won’t be happy until you are making a difference.

Lord, thank you for making a difference in my life. Use me to make a difference in peoples lives.

Choose 1 person who you are believing to come to Christ in 2019.

Grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! Ephesians 1:17-19

Our lives are a gift from God, to live the hyper coloured life I believe we should try to make the most of our life by:

  1. Mastering self-discipline

The book of Proverbs gives us practical wisdom on how to make the most of your life and how to avoid wasting it by falling into various traps. This is particularly important with mastering your finances and mastering your time.

  1. Give your life away

You are called to love. You are to live for God and for other people. And as you give yourself away, God will take care of your life. The teaching of Jesus is radical and revolutionary. It is exactly the opposite of what we would expect, yet we see how it works out in practice. Those who seek their own satisfaction end up disillusioned and dissatisfied having wasted their lives; those who follow Jesus’ teaching find life in all its fullness.

  1. Serve God at work

You do not need to leave your job in order to serve God. As you serve God in your every day life and work, his Spirit will fill your life for these tasks and your life will take on a new dimension.

Lord, thank you for the gift of life, help me by your Holy Spirit to make the most of my life. Come and fill every part of my world with your hyper coloured life.

Write down 3 areas that you can put Christ first in this year.
